Medicare has started publishing how well patients fared after hip and knee replacement surgeries. It evaluated how often a hospital’s patients ended up being readmitted within 30 days of discharge. It also looked at how often patients suffered a serious complication after the operation, such as a blood clot, infection, problem with the artificial joint or death.
While Medicare rated most hospitals as average, it identified 95 hospitals with rates that were higher than the national average in one of the two categories, and 97 hospitals with rates that were lower than average. Those outlier hospitals are listed in the sortable table below. A dash (—) indicates the hospital had average performance for that indicator.
You can look up any individual hospital on Medicare’s Hospital Compare website or see more detailed information for all hospitals here. In judging hospitals, Medicare evaluated cases between July 2009 and June 2012.
