Clinton Awards Medal to Elizabeth Taylor For AIDS Fundraising

President Clinton yesterday honored 28 Americans with the Presidential Citizens Medal, including actress Elizabeth Taylor for her work in raising money to fight AIDS, the Washington Post reports. The award, established in 1969, recognizes U.S. citizens who have "performed exemplary deeds of service for the nation." At the ceremony, Clinton said of Taylor, "She was born in England, but Elizabeth Taylor became thoroughly American royalty. Perhaps her greatest role has been off the screen, as a relentless, and very, very early, crusader for AIDS research and care." David Ho, an HIV/AIDS researcher and activist, also received a medal for his efforts (Frey, Washington Post, 1/9).
