Chinese Doctors’ Reuse of Needles, Syringes Spreading Hepatitis, HIV
The New York Times today examines "China's love affair with injections and infusions" and how the use of "often inadequately sterilized" needles and syringes is spreading bloodborne infections such as hepatitis B. The Times reports that doctors who try to "cut costs" by reusing potentially tainted injection equipment have "probably also contributed to China's emerging AIDS problem, though scientists believe that HIV ... spreads less efficiently than hepatitis by this route" (Rosenthal, New York Times, 8/20).
