NIDCR Announces Grants to Reduce ‘Oral Health Disparities’
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research on Oct. 1 awarded $49 million in grants to five Centers for Research to Reduce Oral Health Disparities. The centers -- located at Boston University, New York University, University of California at San Francisco, University of Michigan and the University of Washington -- are the "first step" in NIDCR's "plan for eradicating health disparities." The centers' main goals will be to identify the factors that contribute to oral health disparities and develop solutions. The centers will also provide training and career development for scientists of "underrepresented groups" who are interested in oral health disparities research. The NIDCR has partnered with the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities to provide the five centers with approximately $7 million per year for seven years (NIH release, 10/1).
