U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan Applauds International Soccer Game to Raise Funds for AIDS
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Wednesday welcomed the announcement that two European soccer teams will play an exhibition game to raise funds for the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, Xinhua News Agency reports (Xinhua News Agency, 7/24). Italy's AS Roma will play Spain's Real Madrid, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, in New Jersey's Giant Stadium on Aug. 8 (Dell'apa, Boston Globe, 7/23). A U.N. spokesperson told a press conference that a proportion of the money raised at the game will support several U.N. programs to combat HIV/AIDS, as well as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The spokesperson added that Annan will address fans at the game (Xinhua News Agency, 7/24).
