Chicago Tribune Examines Sexual Behavior, HIV/AIDS Prevention Among People Over Age 50

The Chicago Tribune on Wednesday examined how "[i]n the age of AIDS and Viagra, sex among seniors finally is coming into the open but not without some ambivalence and discomfort." The number of AIDS cases among people over age 50 has quintupled since 1990, with people in that age group representing 14% of all HIV/AIDS cases in the United States, the Tribune reports. The disease often goes undiagnosed among people over age 50 because some symptoms might be mistaken for signs of aging, according to the Tribune. In addition, many women over age 50 do not believe they are vulnerable to HIV and do not have adequate information about HIV/AIDS and safer sex practices, the Tribune reports (Lauerman, Chicago Tribune, 1/12).
