New York Times Profiles Musicians Who Performed at Malaria Fundraiser ‘Africa Live’ Concert
The New York Times on Sunday profiled some of the musicians who earlier this month performed at the "Africa Live" concert held in Dakar, Senegal, to raise money to fight malaria, which is one of "Africa's often-forgotten killers" (Polgreen, New York Times, 3/20). On March 12 and 13, tens of thousands of people attended two "Africa Live" concerts, which were organized to raise funds for the Roll Back Malaria campaign in Africa. The African musicians and groups who performed at the concerts included Youssou N'Dour, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Salif Keita, Oumou Sangare, Khaled, Manu Dibango, Baaba Maal, Rokia Traore, DJ Awadi, Awilo Longomba, Yunasi and Femi Anikulapo Kuti (GlobalHealthReporting.org, 3/16). "When I learned that malaria kills so many people just because they can't get simple medicine or a net to cover their beds, I said, 'This is not possible, we must do something,'" N'Dour said, adding, "It is like a tsunami every day here in Africa, only it happens slowly so no one notices, no one pays attention. So we have to bring the attention ourselves" (New York Times, 3/20). The complete article is available online.
