South Korean Foreign Minister Appointed U.N. Secretary-General, Lists HIV/AIDS Among Priorities
South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon on Friday was appointed U.N. secretary-general by the body's General Assembly, the New York Times reports. Ban listed curbing the spread of HIV -- as well as issues such as U.N. reform, development goals, human rights, terrorism and environmental degradation -- as one of his top priorities (Hoge, New York Times, 10/14). Ban, who will succeed current Secretary-General Kofi Annan, will begin his five-year term on Jan. 1 (VOA News, 10/14).
