Pennsylvania Hospitals’ Uncompensated Care Costs Increased 12.2% in FY 2007, Report Finds
The amount of uncompensated care at Pennsylvania hospitals in fiscal year 2007 totaled $678 million, a 12.2% increase over the previous year, according to a report released on Thursday by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The amount of uncompensated care increased faster than overall revenue at the hospitals, the report found. About a quarter of Pennsylvania's 170 general hospitals reported revenue loses, but overall the financial health of the industry and operating margins improved, the report found. The hospitals that reported losses were disproportionately small community hospitals in rural areas (Burling, Philadelphia Inquirer, 6/12).
