‘NewsHour’ Examines the Global AIDS Drug Issue

Last night's "NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" on PBS examined the "Price of AIDS" with a report on the prohibitively high cost of antiretroviral drugs for most HIV-positive patients in developing countries. The show featured a panel of experts who discussed plans to provide drugs to developing countries and not-for-profit organizations working in those countries. Elizabeth Farnsworth interviewed Joelle Tanguy, U.S. executive director of Doctors Without Borders; Jeffrey Sachs, professor at Harvard University and chairperson of WHO's Commission on Macroeconomics and Health; Dr. Glaudine Mtshali, South Africa's health representative to the United States, Brazil and Canada, and Shannon Herzfeld, senior vice president of international affairs for PhRMA, a representative organization of American drug makers (PBS, "NewsHour," 2/21).
