Two ‘Major’ Research Initiatives to Study Health of Appalachia
The Appalachian Regional Commission on Oct. 23 announced the launch of two "major" research studies of Appalachia. According to ARC officials, the research represents the first 'comprehensive' study of the region in more than 30 years. One of the studies, conducted by researchers at West Virginia University's Office of Social Environment and Health Research, will examine the region's disparities in health status and accessibility to care. The other study, conducted by Washington, D.C.-based Project HOPE will analyze the region's health care facilities to identify those at risk of closure and to advise local practitioners on "priorities" for investments that will advance delivery of health care and outcomes. Both studies are scheduled to be completed by November 2002 (ARC release, 10/24).
