Minnesota Seniors More Likely to Lack Drug Coverage Than Seniors Nationwide, Survey Finds
More senior citizens in Minnesota lack prescription drug coverage compared with seniors in other areas of the nation, according to a recent study by the state Department of Health, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The survey found that 49% of the state's 595,000 seniors are without prescription drug coverage, compared with 38% of Medicare beneficiaries nationwide. The survey also found:
- Some 26% of Minnesota seniors do not "rely on the private market" for prescription drug coverage; those with coverage often qualify for Medical Assistance programs or have benefits through a former employer.
- In the private market, 24% of Minnesota's seniors have purchased a supplemental insurance policy, which includes a drug benefit that covers up to 50% of seniors' medication costs.
- Nearly 50% of state residents over age 65 have no drug coverage, and 59% of those over age 80 lack coverage.
- Minnesotans in lower income levels are more likely to lack coverage; 58% of such individuals do not have a drug benefit.
