Bono Meets With Indiana Senator To Discuss Global HIV/AIDS Legislation

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) on Thursday met with Irish rock star and AIDS advocate Bono to discus a global HIV/AIDS bill, the Lafayette Journal and Courier reports. Bono this week is meeting with government officials in Washington, D.C., to lobby for HIV/AIDS legislation. Lugar, chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also discussed Bono's recent trip to Indiana (Lafayette Journal and Courier, 3/21). Bono in December 2002 stopped in Indianapolis during his seven-state Heart of America Tour during which he sought "grass-roots" support for the fight against AIDS in Africa. The tour, which was sponsored by Bono's organization Debt, AIDS, Trade in Africa, also urged President Bush and lawmakers to increase U.S. funding to Africa to fight HIV/AIDS (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 12/4/02). Lugar and Bono also discussed the senator's efforts to "build bipartisan consensus and move forward" on his global HIV/AIDS legislation in the Senate (Lafayette Journal and Courier, 3/21).
