New York Times Profiles Chinese Physician Who Has Fought Spread of HIV/AIDS
The New York Times on Saturday profiled Dr. Gao Yaojie, a physician who has fought the spread of HIV/AIDS in China for years "as government officials ignored AIDS or pretended it was not spreading in China." Gao has tracked the spread of HIV in Henan province and has provided care and informational brochures for residents with the disease at a time when "many people did not know the name of the disease that was killing them," the Times reports. Although the Chinese government has begun to address HIV/AIDS, Gao continues to visit rural villages that are affected by the disease and has called for help regarding the increasing number of AIDS orphans (Yardley, New York Times, 12/20).
