G8 Leaders Should Show ‘Leadership, Vision, Political Courage’ in AIDS Fight, Mandela Says at Arctic Circle 46664 Concert
Leaders of the Group of Eight industrialized nations should show more "leadership, vision and political courage" in the fight against HIV/AIDS, former South African President Nelson Mandela said at the third 46664 HIV/AIDS awareness concert in Tromsoe, Norway, on Saturday, BBC News reports (BBC News, 6/11). The concert, titled "46664 ARCTIC," sent a message to leaders of the G8 -- who will meet in Gleneagles, Scotland, next month -- that more commitment is needed to fight the pandemic. The concert aimed to raise awareness among youth in the region, particularly in Russia (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 5/2). Mandela said that the G8 at its July summit should take the lead in fighting disease and poverty in Africa, adding, "They have an historical opportunity to open the door to hope and the possibility of a better life for all" (Bell, Reuters AltertNet, 6/11).
