Virginia Increases Medicaid Eligibility Level Effective July 1; Group Launches Information Campaign
The Virginia chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill has launched a public information campaign to alert the state's elderly and disabled to new Medicaid eligibility requirements set to take effect July 1. According to the Newport News Daily Press, a "little-noticed provision in the state budget" eases the state's Medicaid income guidelines for seniors and people with disabilities to include "full coverage for people who earn up to 80% of the federal poverty level," or an annual income of $6,872 for an individual. The current threshold for full coverage in 37% FPL, or an annual income of about $3,180 for an individual. "It's possible for countless people to receive the proper treatment and medications if they can only find out that they may now be eligible for coverage," NAMI Executive Director Val Marsh said (Lessig, Newport News Daily Press, 6/28).
