Texas CHIP Program Surpasses Enrollment Goal
Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) announced Sept. 20 that the state has exceeded its goal of enrolling 428,000 children in the Children Health's Insurance Program since its launch 18 months ago, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram reports (Moritz, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, 9/21). Perry said, "Few thought Texas could reach its goal of enrolling 428,000 children. We not only reached our goal, we reached it faster and more effectively than any other state." The number of children in the program now stands at 432,745 (AP/Houston Chronicle, 9/20). Still, about 1.4 million Texas children, or 25%, remain uninsured despite being eligible for CHIP or Medicaid. Texas continues to have the highest rate of uninsured residents in the nation (Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, 9/21).
