Senate Indian Affairs Committee Approves Bill That Would Elevate IHS Head Within HHS
The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs last week approved by voice vote a bill (S 214) that would make the director of the Indian Health Service the HHS assistant secretary for Indian health, National Journal News Service reports. The assistant secretary would advise other agencies and divisions within HHS on issues related to Indian health. The bill, sponsored by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), would allow Dr. Michael Trujillo, the current IHS director, to assume the new post (Warner, National Journal News Service, 3/21).
