29 Egyptian Hospital Employees Sentenced to One Year in Prison After 17 Dialysis Patients Contract HIV
Twenty-nine employees of an Egyptian hospital on Tuesday were sentenced to one year in prison and fined about $443 each after 17 dialysis patients under their care contracted HIV, the Associated Press reports. Abdel-Hamid Abaza, former director of Ahmed Maher Educational Hospital, and 28 doctors and nurses were found guilty of "grave neglect" in conjunction with the HIV transmissions. The case was brought by the husband of one of the patients, who has since died, and the defendants have the right to appeal (Associated Press, 9/24).
