Aetna To Begin Offering Exclusive Provider Organization Plan in New York State
Health insurer Aetna on Dec. 2 announced plans to launch a new exclusive provider organization plan in New York state, the Albany Times Union reports. Aetna received approval from the state Insurance Department to offer the EPO, a plan similar to an HMO but with more flexibility, in 54 counties in New York. The EPO will require members to receive care from a network of providers and facilities but will not require them to coordinate care through a primary care physician, a requirement of most HMOs, the Times Union reports. Aetna hopes that the EPO will help increase business in New York; New York City-based Empire Blue Cross has offered an EPO for four years (Boyer, Albany Times Union, 12/3).
