Female Inequality Must Be Addressed To Reduce HIV Transmission, Editorial Says
To reduce HIV transmission, which is "rising faster among girls and women than among males" globally, "[f]emale inequality" must be addressed, a Minneapolis Star Tribune editorial says. The "tragedy" of HIV/AIDS among women is that "[e]ven women who know how to protect themselves often can't," according to the editorial. In addition to "equipping women with [HIV] prevention methods ... they can control," such as microbicides and female condoms, "engineering the social change necessary to achieve female equality" is vital to achieving "real life-saving" improvements, the editorial says. "Such reform is the surest way to minimize women's special [HIV/]AIDS vulnerability," the editorial concludes (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 6/21).
