Issue Brief Examines VEBAs
"Retiree Health VEBAs: A New Twist on an Old Paradigm," Kaiser Family Foundation: In the issue brief, Phyllis Borzi of George Washington University's School of Public Health and Health Services provides an overview of stand-alone voluntary employees' beneficiary associations trusts, which employers use to avoid future obligations to pay retiree health benefits in exchange for making a payment approximate to the projected cost of these benefits. Borzi looks at three case studies, including the Big Three automaker VEBAs, and examines the pros and cons of the arrangements for retirees, unions and employers (Kaiser Family Foundation release, 3/4).
