AIDS THERAPY: Trade Bill Suspends Tariffs on AIDS Drugs
The House on Tuesday passed a trade bill that would ban the import of products made with dog and cat fur and included an amendment that would suspend import tariffs on two HIV medications, the AP/Los Angeles Times reports. The bill would suspend tariffs for the experimental drugs DPC 961 and DPC 083, which "have proved effective in the treatment of people with HIV" (AP/Los Angeles Times, 10/25). The drugs, under development by DuPont Pharmaceuticals, are non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors that have shown efficacy against HIV that is resistant to currently available NNRTIs (Bartnof, HIVandHepatitis.com, 8/7).
