Zambian President Urges Abstinence, Not Condoms
Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has urged individuals to use abstinence rather than condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, BBC Monitoring/Post reports. According to a report in the Zambian newspaper the Post, Chiluba said, "I don't believe in condoms myself because they are a sign of weak morals on the part of the user." He advised delegates at a Movement for Multiparty Democracy Central Province conference on Dec. 30 to "abstain from casual sex to reduce the ravaging effects of the HIV/AIDS scourge on the nation." He added that he was "worried and scared" that "the country's cemeteries were expanding faster than residential areas due to increased HIV/AIDS-related deaths" (BBC Monitoring/Post, 1/4).
