Kenyan Government Developing Bill to Allow Importation of Cheaper AIDS Drugs

The Kenyan government is planning to introduce legislation in the country's Parliament that would allow the government to import cheaper AIDS drugs, the Daily Nation/AllAfrica.com reports. Speaking to a group of executives from the Federation of Kenya Employers, Kenyan Minister of State Marsden Madoka said that the legislation, likely to be introduced within the next few months, would allow the president to break international trade barriers to import cheaper drugs in "emergency situations." In the meantime, he added, the National AIDS Control Council will "continue the war against the scourge" of HIV/AIDS in Kenya. Madoka "commended" the FKE for developing a code of conduct on HIV/AIDS in the workplace and called on employers to encourage wider use of the code (Daily Nation/AllAfrica.com, 2/27).
