Newsday Examines ‘Long-Term Survivors’ of HIV

In part six of its "AIDS at 20" series, Newsday examines the stories of several people who have lived with HIV for a decade or more. The article addresses the medical advances that have granted these "long-term" survivors "something of a reprieve" from the disease, and explores other "ephemeral factors" patients say have kept them alive. The patients interviewed say that "unfinished business," such as children, careers and activism, helps them "wil[l] themselves" to live. "A lot of this is a mystery ...
