American Foundation for AIDS Research Conference Addresses HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment Options for Women
The American Foundation for AIDS Research sponsored an educational symposium on Friday in New York City to address HIV prevention and treatment issues that specifically relate to women, who now constitute more than 25% of all U.S. AIDS cases. Geared towards health care professionals who care for women with HIV/AIDS, the symposium addressed such topics as guidelines for HAART treatment, HPV infection, menstrual disorders, body changes and lipodystrophy, cervical screening, prevention of vertical transmission, and post-exposure prophylaxis. The program was co-chaired by Dr. Waffaa El-Sadr, chair of Infectious Diseases at New York's Harlem Hospital Center, and Dr. Kenneth Mayer, the director of Brown University's AIDS Program. Linda Villarosa, a contributing writer for the New York Times Science section, was the luncheon keynote speaker at the full-day symposium (amfAR release, 10/18).
