CORRECTION
The Feb. 7 Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report story "South Florida Cities Lead Country in Number of New AIDS Cases Among Young Adults" contained several inaccurate statistics that were originally reported in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel (South Florida Sun-Sentinel, 2/13). The Florida Department of Health Bureau of HIV/AIDS notes that the original Sun-Sentinel article should have said the following:
- Within Florida in 2000, among those aged 18-29, Miami reported 161 AIDS cases, Ft. Lauderdale reported 98 cases and West Palm Beach reported 59. CDC data for the 18-29 age group for all metropolitan areas in the country are not yet available.
- The reported 2000 AIDS case rates per 100,000 population in Florida were 14 for whites, 122.8 for blacks and 26.8 for Hispanics.
- The AIDS case rates were 8.8 times greater among blacks than whites and 1.9 times greater among Hispanics than whites.
- Seventy-five percent of reported HIV cases and 75% of reported AIDS cases among women in Florida in 2000 were among non-Hispanic blacks (CDC HIV/STD/TB Prevention News Update, 2/11).
