Chicago Tribune Examines HIV/AIDS Impact on South African Town

While world leaders this week attend the U.N. World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, to address development issues such as poverty, infectious diseases and access to clean water, the Chicago Tribune reports that the most "immediate and horrific" challenge to development is HIV/AIDS, which has "devastat[ed]" Ingwavuma, a town in the South African province of KwaZula-Natal. Health experts estimate that 35% to 40% of the population in Ingwavuma is HIV-positive. However, few people are tested for the virus, and antiretrovial treatment is too expensive for most to obtain (Goering, Chicago Tribune, 8/28). The full article is available online.
