International Red Cross/Red Crescent Launches Five-Year $14 Million Effort to Fight HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies on Tuesday launched a five-year, $14 million initiative to fight HIV/AIDS in 10 sub-Saharan African countries, Reuters reports (Reuters, 10/2). The program will focus on providing home-based care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and expanding HIV prevention and education efforts in Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In addition, the IFRC will work to reduce the vulnerability of women to HIV/AIDS and bolster support groups for people living with the disease. The initiative is funded by grants from the governments of the Netherlands and Sweden (International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies release, 10/1).
