Los Angeles Times Looks at UCSF Medicinal Marijuana Study
The Los Angeles Times yesterday profiled a University of California-San Francisco study of marijuana's ability to relieve peripheral nerve pain associated with HIV/AIDS. The study is the first sponsored by the University of California's Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research, which receives $3 million in state funds per year for three years to study potential medical uses for marijuana. Dr. Donald Abrams, the study's director, said that in light of the lack of data supporting marijuana's medicinal benefits, he is trying to "inject some facts into this very emotionally charged debate" (Marsa, Los Angeles Times, 10/14).
