First South African AIDS Conference To Take ‘Unique’ Approach
HIV/AIDS expert Dr. Jerry Coovadia, a professor at Natal University in South Africa, on Thursday announced the launch of the South African AIDS Conference 2003, a "unique" HIV/AIDS conference scheduled to be held in Durban, South Africa, in August 2003. Coovadia, who chaired the XIII International AIDS Conference in Durban in July 2000 and who will chair the new conference, said that some people "complai[n]" that there are "too many meetings and conferences" on HIV/AIDS but added that the first South African AIDS Conference aims to provide "nothing less than ... a comprehensive, holistic and precisely relevant program" for everyone affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, including the media, business leaders and community leaders. The conference will also provide a "broader African perspective" on HIV/AIDS by including speeches from scientists, medical professionals and community members (South African AIDS Conference 2003 release, 11/7).
