Pharmaceutical Companies Currently Developing 83 New HIV/AIDS-Related Treatments, PhRMA 2002 Survey Shows

Currently, pharmaceutical companies have 83 new HIV/AIDS treatments, including 14 new vaccines and 33 antiretroviral drugs, in the development "pipeline," all of which are either in human clinical trials or waiting for FDA approval, according to the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America 2002 survey released yesterday. According to the survey, titled "New Medicines in Development for AIDS," since 1987, 74 drugs have been approved for the treatment of AIDS and AIDS-related complications. PhRMA Senior Vice President Dr. John Kelly said, "We now have a large number of medicines in development to attack HIV in a variety of ways.
