NIAID Director Discusses AIDS in Asia, Expectations for International AIDS Conference in kaisernetwork.org Interview
Asia is experiencing "the tip of the iceberg" in its HIV/AIDS epidemic, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the NIH National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says in a kaisernetwork.org interview recorded ahead of the XV International AIDS Conference to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, July 11-16. "You have the potential for an explosion, that given the numbers of people who live in Asia, that could potentially dwarf what we're seeing in Africa," he adds. Fauci says that the biannual International AIDS Conference "serves as an excellent vehicle for forging relationships, reaffirming old relationships and developing better interactions," adding that the "signature" of a successful conference is the exchange of information among health care providers, community members, social workers and scientists. Fauci in the interview also discusses the state of HIV vaccine research (Interview transcript, 6/22).
The complete interview, as well as a transcript, is available online.
