IAVI Report on Global Impact of AIDS Vaccine, Brief on Advanced Market Commitment for Vaccine Development
The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative recently released a report and brief discussing different aspects of HIV/AIDS vaccine development. Summaries of two of the resources are below.
- "Estimating the Global Impact of an AIDS Vaccine": The publication suggests that an HIV/AIDS vaccine that is only moderately effective could reduce the number of new HIV cases by one-third. In addition, the report emphasizes the importance of using existing HIV prevention methods, including education and condom promotion, with a potential vaccine to maximize the effects of the combined efforts (IAVI, "Estimating the Global Impact of an AIDS Vaccine," October 2005).
- "Advanced Market Commitments: Helping to Accelerate AIDS Vaccine Development": The policy brief analyzes the role of an advanced market commitment as an incentive mechanism for motivating the pharmaceutical industry to increase its investment in new HIV/AIDS vaccine research that targets primarily low-income populations in developing countries. According to the report, an AMC would accompany other measures, including government research grants and funding from public-private partnerships, to act as a catalyst in the development and delivery of a vaccine (IAVI, "Advanced Market Commitments: Helping to Accelerate AIDS Vaccine Development," November 2005).
