Canadian Researcher Elected President of International AIDS Society
Canadian researcher Julio Montaner has been elected president-elect of the International AIDS Society, the Vancouver Sun reports. Montaner, who is acting director of the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, will assume his role at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto, which is scheduled for Aug. 13 through Aug. 18 (Vancouver Sun, 2/23). He will take over as president in 2008 (CBCNews, 1/22). Montaner said that he plans to promote the role of the Society worldwide in preventing, controlling and treating HIV/AIDS. He also plans to focus on widening access to antiretroviral therapy worldwide (Canadian Press, 2/23).
