Obama’s Choice For Senior Health Position Causes Controversy
"President Obama has announced that Alexia Kelley, founder of the antiabortion group Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good, will serve as the director of the Health and Human Services Department's Center for Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, arousing the ire of some abortion rights activists," ABC News reports. While Catholics in Alliance supports a "consistent culture of life that includes protections for unborn children," according to the group's website, Kelley has also "supported politicians who support abortion rights and has supported lifting the ban on federally funding embryonic cell research," according to ABC.
Kelley was an advisor to Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., during his 2004 presidential campaign, and "her group came under attack from the conservative Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights." Kelley's appointment has already triggered a debate in the blogosphere, including a scuffle between Catholics for Choice and the "progressive group Catholics United" (Tapper, 6/8).
