South African Health Minister Criticizes E.U. Statements on South Africa’s AIDS Crisis
South African Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang on Tuesday "admonished" the European Parliament for criticizing the South African government's "controversial" AIDS policy, adding that Europe is itself "embroiled in its own public health crisis" over foot-and-mouth disease. Last month, a visiting European delegation "criticized" the South African government for "not doing enough" to fight AIDS. Tshabalala-Msimang added that the country is "beginning to get a hold on the epidemic" through education efforts, treatment programs for opportunistic infections and initiatives aimed at "chang[ing]" sexual behavior and alleviating poverty (Swindells, Reuters, 4/3).
