Elizabeth Glaser Foundation, Denver Sports Teams Donate $10,000 to Buy Infant Formula for South Africans
Denver, Colo., Mayor Wellington Webb's trade mission to Africa announced on Tuesday in Soweto, South Africa, that the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and several Colorado groups have donated $10,000 to a South African AIDS clinic and hospital to help purchase infant formula for HIV-positive mothers, the Denver Post reports. The donation was split evenly between the Elizabeth Glaser Foundation and several Colorado sports teams, including the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rockies, the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche. The money will be shared by a Soweto-based AIDS clinic and the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and will be used to purchase formula so that HIV-positive women can avoid breastfeeding. HIV can be transmitted through breastmilk, but many HIV-positive mothers in South Africa cannot afford formula (Brovsky, Denver Post, 2/27).
