Good Housekeeping Rewards Sens. Mikulski, Snowe for Work on Women’s Health
Sens. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) on June 12 received a shared $25,000 award from Good Housekeeping magazine for their work on legislation to promote women's health issues, the Baltimore Sun reports. The senators were recognized for taking steps to establish the NIH's Office of Research on Women's Health; working to include more women in medical research and clinical trials; and focusing on quality standards for mammograms and breast and cervical cancer screenings for uninsured and low-income women. Mikulski said she would donate her portion of the award to the Sisters of Mercy in Baltimore, Md., who advocate education, health care and the "empowerment of women, particularly poor women" (Baltimore Sun, 6/13).
