Zambian President Mwanawasa Urges Citizens To Be Tested for HIV
Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Friday urged Zambians to get tested for HIV, Xinhuanet reports. Mwanawasa said that the epidemic will "wipe out the country" if the country's citizens do not "take it upon themselves" to fight the disease, according to Zambia's Daily Mail, Xinhuanet reports. Mwanawasa said that national development has been slowed and the number of orphans has risen in part because people do not undergo HIV testing. In Zambia, about 16% of the country's 11 million people are thought to be HIV-positive and there are approximately 620,000 orphans, 6% of whom are living on the streets (Xinhuanet, 10/16).
