NEJM Perspective Examines Debate Over SCHIP Expansion
"The Proxy War -- SCHIP and the Government's Role in Health Care Reform," New England Journal of Medicine: In the NEJM perspective, Sara Rosenbaum of George Washington University details events leading up to an unsuccessful effort by the House in January to override a veto of SCHIP expansion legislation and other attempts by the Bush administration to prevent an expansion of the program. According to Rosenbaum, the "SCHIP battle became a proxy war over the duties that government should assume in national health care reform" (Rosenbaum, NEJM, 2/28).
