Democratic Senators Seek Assurances From Trump About Plans For Medicare, Medicaid

In a letter to the president-elect, 21 senators remind him of his promises during the campaign not to cut spending for the two popular federal programs and question whether recent comments and postings on his website suggest a change of heart.

CNN: Elizabeth Warren Warns Trump: Don't Cut Medicare And Medicaid

Democratic senators are urging President-elect Donald Trump to keep his campaign promise not to cut spending for Medicare and Medicaid. "During your campaign for President of the United States, you differentiated yourself from your 16 primary opponents by noting that you were the only Republican who would protect Medicare and Medicaid," the senators, led by Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Ron Wyden of Oregon, wrote in a letter to Trump. "After winning the election, you suddenly appear to be using language supporting policies that would gut Medicare and Medicaid programs." (Luhby, 12/8)

Providence Journal: Reed, Whitehouse Among Senators Questioning Trump On His Medicare, Medicaid Policy

U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse were among a group of 21 senators who joined together Wednesday to confront President-elect Donald Trump over health-care policy, specifically Medicare and Medicaid. The group, which also includes Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, sent Trump a letter, reminding him of his campaign promises to reject cuts to both health-care entitlement programs. The group's letter also asks the president-elect if he still intends to follow that course. (Reynolds, 12/8)
