Bush Approves First Installment of U.S. Donation to Global AIDS and Health Fund
President Bush approved Tuesday a $6.5 billion appropriations bill (HR 2216) that includes $100 million for fighting HIV/AIDS internationally (White House release, 7/24). The bill covers the remaining 10 weeks of FY 2001, which ends on Sept. 30, and the a $100 million donation will go to the U.N. Global AIDS and Health Fund. Both chambers of Congress passed the measure last week (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 7/23). Bush has pledged $200 million for the fund (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 7/18). In a White House release, Bush said of the measure, "This important supplemental appropriation provides urgently needed resources ... to provide a U.S. contribution for the global trust fund to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis" (White House release, 7/24).
