Columbus Dispatch Profiles AIDS Orphanages in Haiti
The Columbus Dispatch on Sunday profiled two orphanages in Haiti -- the Rainbow House and the Sisters of Charity Orphanage -- that assist children whose parents have died of AIDS-related causes. The Rainbow House orphanage, founded in 1996 by Danielle Penette, is funded through the support of UNICEF and other organizations. The Sisters of Charity Orphanage, which is operated by the order of nuns founded by Mother Teresa, can house about 180 infants, many of whom have HIV, tuberculosis or meningitis. Health workers at the orphanage provide medical care for the sick infants and return them to their birth parents or to adoptive parents. Parents receive training, food and medicine for the infants at no cost from the not-for-profit group Hands Together and other organizations (Hallett, Columbus Dispatch, 6/20). Haiti -- where one in 20 people is HIV-positive -- has the highest HIV prevalence outside of Africa (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 6/16).
