Editorial Addresses Race Relations in the Workplace for Black Physicians
"Black Physicians' Experience With Race: Should We Be Surprised?" Annals of Internal Medicine: The editorial addresses a recent study that found physicians of African decent "felt that race permeated their experience in the workplace, shaped their interpersonal interactions, and defined their institutional climate" among other experiences. According to the editorial, the "health care workplace is often silent on the issue of race," which can cultivate negative professional experiences among minority physicians and can result in "racial fatigue." Health care organizations "that are truly committed to excellence and equality" should be "surprised enough by these findings to take tangible steps to ensure that all minority physicians feel respected, valued and empowered," the editorial concludes (Annals of Internal Medicine, 1/2).
