White Retirees Healthier than Black, Study States
White retirees ages 51 to 59 and white workers ages 60 and older are "healthier and better-off financially" than their black counterparts, according to a study of the health and financial differences between white and black retirees conducted by the National Academy on an Aging Society. Asking, "Do Young Retirees and Older Workers Differ by Race?", the study found that about 36% of young white retirees reported "excellent to very good physical health," compared with 13% of blacks. Among older white workers, about 50% reported "excellent to very good physical health" compared with less than one-third of blacks ("Do Young Retirees and Older Retirees Differ by Race?", December 2000).
