South African Boxers to be Tested Quarterly for HIV
South African boxing representatives agreed at their annual convention on Saturday that the country's boxers should be tested quarterly for HIV, and those testing positive will be referred to a counseling system, Agence France-Presse reports. Participants of the convention in Cape Town unaminously acknowledged AIDS is a "serious threat to South African boxing." At the end of 2000, an estimated one in nine South Africans was HIV-positive (Agence France-Presse, 11/18).
