Two Newspapers Examine How HIV/AIDS Affecting Children, Orphans in Africa
- The Washington Post on Saturday examined the plight of AIDS orphans in Ethiopia. Although Ethiopia has a "far lower" HIV/AIDS prevalence than some other African countries, such as South Africa and Zimbabwe, the country has the highest prevalence of HIV-positive children in the world, with approximately 200,000 HIV-positive children living there, according to the United Nations (Wax, Washington Post, 2/19). The complete article is available online.
- The Columbus Dispatch on Sunday examined how the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa has affected families and children. South Africa has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the world and the spread of the disease can be attributed to poverty, "cultural myths, the subordinate position of women and an overextended health care system," according to the Dispatch (Williams, Columbus Dispatch, 2/20).
