Sen. Rodham Clinton Announces Increase in HIV/AIDS Funding to New York City, Long Island Region
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) on Tuesday announced an increase of nearly $3 million in HIV/AIDS federal funding for New York City and Long Island, Newsday reports. According to Newsday, New York City is expected to receive an additional $2.5 million in fiscal year 2006, which begins next month, and Long Island is expected to receive an additional $300,000. The Ryan White CARE Act, which funds HIV/AIDS care and services nationwide, will distribute the money, Newsday reports (Thomas, Newsday, 3/1). Rodham Clinton in a statement said, "New York is the epicenter of our nation's AIDS epidemic," she added, "This additional funding will help ensure that thousands of New Yorkers can receive the services they need to remain healthy" (Rodham Clinton release, 2/28). According to Newsday, many local HIV/AIDS advocates were surprised by the announcement. Tara Tate, senior vice president for HIV/AIDS grants management for the United Way of Long Island, said the funding increase was "absolutely a positive," adding, "I was at least hoping for flat funding and praying that we would not get cut" (Newsday, 3/1).
